Translation assistance

If you have trouble understanding English, contact the Translating and Interpreting Service (TIS). You can reach the TIS on its 24-hour telephone number 131450. You can call from anywhere in Australia for the cost of a local call. Do not hang up. Your call will be answered.

The Translating and Interpreting Service (TIS) is a national service with offices in each state and territory. The service offers both telephone and face to face interpreting. If you need an interpreter to attend an appointment, you will need to book a few days in advance. TIS is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the cost of a local call on 13 14 50.

Some states and territories also have other interpreter services available in a range of community languages. Some have health interpreters who are specially trained to interpret medical terms and procedures. The service is usually free of charge in public hospitals.
