What is ovarian treatment?

Ovarian treatment lowers the amount of oestrogen in your body. Oestrogen is a hormone made by your ovaries. Some cancers need oestrogen to grow. By treating the ovaries, the production of oestrogen is reduced and cancers needing oestrogen are less able to grow. For this reason, ovarian treatment is only useful for women who are pre-menopausal. It is used to treat cancers which have oestrogen positive receptors.

Key Points

Ovarian treatment can be given in any of the following ways:

  • a hormone implant is put under the skin in your stomach each months for two years of more to stop your ovaries from making oestrogen
    or
  • You might have an operation to take out your ovaries (oophorectomy)
    or
  • radiation therapy is given to your ovaries to stop them from working.
